We currently list 52 hot springs in Iceland: 13 wild or natural, 18 resorts or spas, 21 public pools or bathhouses. 1 of them is closed or temporarily closed, and marked on their cards and pages. The list grows as we verify new places.
Yes, 16 of the springs we list in Iceland have no entry fee, including Drangsnes Hot Pots (Pottarnir á Drangsnesi), Geothermal Goldfish Pond (Yltjörn), Gjörvidalslaug (Gervidalslaug), Grafarlaug (Reykjadalslaug) and Guðrúnarlaug. Free springs are usually undeveloped, so expect no changing rooms or lifeguards, and check parking rules.
Of the springs with published temperatures, Reykjafjarðarlaug runs hottest, at up to 90-113°F (32-45°C). Water that hot needs short soaks; test it with a hand before you get in.
Álftaneslaug, Birkimelur Pool (Laugarneslaug), Blue Lagoon, Drangsnes Hot Pots (Pottarnir á Drangsnesi) and Earth Lagoon Mývatn (Jarðböðin við Mývatn) are the most family-friendly options we list, with lifeguarded or shallow pools and facilities on site. Clothing-optional springs are excluded.
Álftaneslaug, Birkimelur Pool (Laugarneslaug), Blue Lagoon, Drangsnes Hot Pots (Pottarnir á Drangsnesi) and Earth Lagoon Mývatn (Jarðböðin við Mývatn) have parking within a few minutes' walk of the water. 12 others need a walk or a hike, which is noted on each listing.
