Three ways to soak
A riverside pool you hiked to and a Budapest bathhouse are both hot springs, but they are very different days out. Start with the kind you want.
Wild & natural
Rock pools in rivers, desert seeps and forest soaks with no staff and few facilities. Usually free or a small parking fee, often clothing optional, and sometimes a hike in. Bring water, shoes and a bag for your trash.

Resorts & spas
Thermal resorts, Japanese onsen inns, European spa towns and commercial bathhouses. Expect changing rooms, set hours, entry fees or day passes, and often lodging, food and treatments.

Public pools & parks
Municipal geothermal pools, public bathhouses and park-run soaking areas. Cheaper than resorts, usually family friendly, with lifeguards and showers. Iceland and Hungary are full of them.
