- Yufu city counts about 850 hot spring sources in the Yufuin basin, in three main water types.
- Otomaru Onsenkan, near Yufuin Station, is a local bath where you drop ¥200 in the box; open 6:00 to 22:00.
- Musoen and Tsukanoma have big open-air baths facing Mount Yufu for ¥1,000 and ¥800.
- Oita Prefecture bans mixed bathing for anyone aged 7 or over, so older children use their own sex's bath.
What to expect
Yufuin is a hot spring town in a farming basin in Yufu city, inland from Beppu and overlooked by the double peak of Mount Yufu. It feels different from Beppu. There are no big hotel blocks along a seafront, no steaming “hells”, and the inns are spread out among rice fields, woods and lanes of craft shops and cafes. The main street between Yufuin Station and Kinrin Lake gets crowded by late morning; step off it and the place is quiet.
The Yufu City Tourism Bureau traces Yufuin’s name back to the Bungo Fudoki, a provincial record compiled in the early Nara period. Its modern look owes a lot to a resident-led town planning movement from the late 1950s, which pushed for growth that fitted the fields and hills rather than high-rise resorts.
There is no single grand public bathhouse. Day visitors use a mix of one very cheap local bath, hotel and ryokan day baths, and a modern health spa.
The water
The tourism bureau says the Yufuin area has about 850 hot spring sources and plenty of flow. Rain on the surrounding mountains soaks underground, is heated by the volcanic systems of Kuju and Yufu-Tsurumi, and comes back up. It groups the water into three main types:
- Alkaline simple springs, mild and slippery.
- Sodium chloride springs, some of which turn blue or milky as they sit.
- Sodium chloride-sulfate-bicarbonate springs.
Because every inn taps its own source, the water varies from bath to bath. Tsukanoma, for example, is known for cobalt-blue water whose colour changes with the day’s conditions, and says its big open-air bath is gensen kakenagashi (fed straight from the source). Most other facilities on the list do not say whether they heat, circulate or chlorinate.
Day baths and prices
These come from the Yufu City Tourism Bureau’s day-bath roundup, updated on October 15, 2026. The bureau warns that baths sometimes close for maintenance, so check before you go.

A few notes on each:
- Otomaru Onsenkan is the locals’ bath near the station. You drop ¥200 in the offering box before a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the guardian of the spring, and go in. The water is clear, from a 133°F56°C source. Bring your own towel and soap.
- Musoen has a women’s open-air bath the bureau puts at over 150 tatami mats in size, facing Mount Yufu, plus family baths you can use without booking. Some days are unavailable, so call 0977-84-2171.
- Sansuikan, near the station, splits its day-bath time so that men get the Yufu-no-yu bath with an open-air tub and sauna, and women get Asagiri-no-yu with pottery tubs.
- Tsukanoma sells hot spring steamed eggs for ¥100.
- Quarzh Yufuin is a German-style health spa opened in 1990. Its Bade zone with warm pools, jets and walking baths needs a swimsuit (rentals available); there are also ordinary bathing areas without swimsuits.
Bathing tax: Yufu city raised its nyuto-zei on October 1, 2024. Day bathers pay ¥70 when the bath fee is ¥400 or more. Overnight guests pay ¥250 per person per night when the room rate is over ¥4,000, or ¥100 at or below that. Under-12s are exempt.
About Shitan-yu
Older guides send you to Shitan-yu, a thatched bathhouse on the shore of Kinrin Lake that used to be a mixed bath. We could not confirm that it is running. It is missing from the tourism bureau’s 2026 day-bath list, and the most recent visitor report we found, from May 2024, said it was suspended. Even if it reopens, Oita’s rules mean no mixed bathing for anyone aged 7 or over.
Rules and etiquette
- Baths are split by sex and you bathe naked, except in Quarzh Yufuin’s swimsuit zone.
- Oita mixed-bathing rule: since January 1, 2022, the prefectural ordinance bans mixed bathing for anyone aged 7 or over. Children under 7 may go in with a parent of either sex.
- Wash before you get in, keep towels out of the water, and tie up long hair.
- Tattoos: no policy is published on the tourism bureau’s list. Ask each facility before you go.
Getting there
- By train from Fukuoka: the Yufuin no Mori limited express runs Hakata to Yufuin in about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 20 minutes. JR Kyushu lists two round trips a day between Hakata and Yufuin, all seats reserved; on days it does not run, the Yufu takes the same timetable. Seats fill fast, and JR suggests the route via Kokura and Oita as a backup.
- From Beppu: the Yufuin no Mori continues to Beppu on some trips, and a new open-top double-decker sightseeing bus (Beppu-Yufuin course) has run daily since October 7, 2026. See our Beppu Onsen listing.
- By car: leave the Oita Expressway at Yufuin IC. The tourism bureau warns that the straight road into town, Prefectural Route 216, jams badly on holidays, and suggests turning right at the Yufuin IC entrance signal onto Route 210 and then Route 11 instead. Many lanes in town are narrow, one-way or dead ends, street parking is banned, and the Yamanami Highway (Route 11) toward Beppu has sharp curves and a high accident rate.
When to go
Weekdays are far calmer than weekends. Holiday periods bring heavy traffic; the tourism bureau issued congestion warnings for the September 2026 holidays. Winter mornings are the time for Kinrin Lake, when mist rises off the water. Summer is hot in the basin; morning and evening baths are the comfortable ones.
After the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake: the summer 2026 quake centred on neighbouring Kumamoto Prefecture. The tourism bureau’s notices since then cover events and travel discounts rather than damage, and Oita Prefecture is running the “Kyushu Fukko Oen-wari” recovery travel discount for stays from October 1 to December 25, 2026 (up to 50% off, capped by product type). Check road and rail notices if you are coming via Kumamoto.
Where to stay nearby
Yufuin has many small ryokan, often with private open-air baths, plus larger hotels near the station; the tourism bureau’s booking site lists them. Musoen and Sansuikan both take overnight guests. Within Yufu city, Yunohira Onsen is an older stone-paved spa village where the communal Gin-no-yu bath costs ¥300, and Tsukahara Onsen, north of Mount Yufu, has strongly acidic water. Down the hill, Beppu has the cheap city bathhouses and the hells, and Kurokawa Onsen is reachable on the Kyushu Odan bus.
Safety notes
- Hot sources: Otomaru’s source is 133°F56°C. Test tubs before getting in.
- Driving: take the mountain roads slowly, especially Route 11 toward Beppu in the late afternoon.
- Alcohol: do not bathe after drinking.
- Floors: wet stone around open-air baths is slippery.

Yufuin Onsen: common questions
Where can day visitors bathe in Yufuin?
The Yufu City Tourism Bureau's October 2026 list includes Otomaru Onsenkan (¥200, 6:00-22:00, closed the third Thursday), Tsukanoma (¥800, 9:30-18:30, closed Wednesday and Thursday), Musoen (¥1,000, 10:00-14:30), Yufuin Sansuikan (¥1,000 with a face towel, 13:00-16:00), Quarzh Yufuin (¥830, 10:00-21:30) and NOGIKU private sauna from ¥5,000 by reservation.
Is there a cheap public bath in Yufuin?
Yes. Otomaru Onsenkan, a short walk from JR Yufuin Station, is a plain local bath where you put ¥200 in the offering box in front of a Yakushi Nyorai statue. It opens at 6:00, closes at 22:00 and is shut on the third Thursday of each month. The water is clear and comes from a source at 133°F56°C.
Can children go in the opposite-sex bath in Yufuin?
Only young ones. Since January 1, 2022, Oita Prefecture has banned mixed bathing in public baths for anyone aged 7 or over, so a child of 7 or older must use the bath for their own sex. Families who want to bathe together can use a family bath (kazoku-buro), which Musoen offers without a booking.
Is Shitan-yu by Kinrin Lake open?
We could not confirm it. The thatched lakeside bath does not appear in the tourism bureau's 2026 day-bath list, and a May 2024 visitor report described it as suspended. Treat it as closed unless the tourist office tells you otherwise.
How do you get to Yufuin from Fukuoka?
The all-reserved Yufuin no Mori limited express runs from Hakata to Yufuin in about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 20 minutes, two round trips a day on its operating days, with the Yufu running on the same timetable on other days. Seats sell out, so book early. By car, use Yufuin IC on the Oita Expressway.
Is there a bathing tax in Yufuin?
Yes. Yufu city raised its bathing tax on October 1, 2024. Overnight guests pay ¥250 per person per night when the room rate is over ¥4,000 (¥100 at or below), and day bathers pay ¥70 when the fee is ¥400 or more. Children under 12 are exempt.
