  • Advance booking is compulsory, and you cannot leave and come back on the same ticket.

What to expect

QC Spa Bagni Nuovi is one of two historic spas run by QC Terme just outside Bormio, at the top of the Valtellina in the Stelvio National Park. It sits in the grounds of the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi, a large 19th-century building that opened in 1836, shortly after the new Stelvio road brought traffic up the valley. The hotel closed in the late 1970s and came back in stages; the full hotel and spa reopened in 2003.

This is real thermal water, which sets it apart from several QC sites. Bormio has nine natural springs. Together they run at roughly 99-109°F37-43°C depending on the season, and the water is classed as hyperthermal, sulphate, alkaline and earthy, with traces of radon. Il Giorno describes the Bormio pools as filled with naturally hot water. QC does not publish the temperature of each individual pool.

The setting matters as much as the water. Most of the circuit is outdoors, on terraces and in woodland on the slope above the valley, with mountains on every side. Expect snow around the pools in winter and green lawns in summer. QC counts 40 “wellness practices” here, a figure that covers pools, saunas, relaxation rooms and the outdoor trails.

The pools

QC names everything after classical gods, which makes the map read like a mythology class. The main water features listed on the official site:

  • Vasca di Venere: an old outdoor panoramic pool with decorated walls.
  • Vasche di Luna e Apollo: twin outdoor pools.
  • Vasca di Bormo: an outdoor pool named after the local deity Bormo, with running water.
  • Vasca delle Muse: two wooden tubs outdoors with a valley view.
  • Vasche di Saturno: a group of outdoor pools beside an old shepherd’s hut (the “baitel”). Il Giorno notes they were once used to wash sheep before shearing, and that they are kept at different temperatures.
  • Fonte di Egeria: another outdoor panoramic pool.

Among the rest are the Sauna di Maia, the Baita di Lucina sauna, the Sauna delle Driadi in a tree house above a pool, the Bosco degli Dei woodland trail, the Giardino di Dafne lawn, and two relaxation rooms (Il Riposo di Minerva and the Baita di Pan hut).

Getting there

The spa is at Via Bagni Nuovi 7 in the municipality of Valdidentro, about 2-3 km (1.5 miles) north-west of central Bormio on the SS301 road toward Livigno. From Milan it is roughly 200 km (125 miles) by road: the SS36 past Lecco to the top of Lake Como, then the SS38 up the Valtellina through Sondrio and Tirano to Bormio. Allow at least three hours, more on Friday evenings and winter weekends.

Local buses stop at Molina on the SS301, just below the Bagni Nuovi turn.

The sister spa, QC Terme Bagni Vecchi, is on the Stelvio road (SS38) about 0.7 km (0.4 miles) away in a straight line, and the free wild pool known as the Pozza di Leonardo is in the gorge just below it.

When to go

The spa is open all year. The busiest times are Italian holidays, ski-season weekends from December to March, and August. Weekday afternoons in late spring or autumn are the quietest.

Weekend hours (from 9:30 a.m.) apply on long weekends and holidays. QC’s current list of these dates is October 31 to November 1, December 5 to 8, December 24 to January 6, February 13-14 and March 26-29. Book early for them.

Winter is the season most people picture: hot water, cold air and snow on the trees. Summer is milder, and the outdoor lawns come into their own.

Prices and booking

QC publishes “from” prices that move with the date and demand. For 2026 the official list shows:

  • 5-hour entry: from €58
  • Unlimited day entry: from €72
  • Evening entry, from 5 p.m.: from €54
  • Late entry, from 7:30 p.m.: from €44
  • Entry with a 25, 50 or 75-minute massage: from €116, €160 and €210
  • Couples’ entry with a couples’ massage: from €232 for two

Every ticket includes the robe, towel, slippers and the “Aperiterme” evening aperitif. Bring your own swimsuit. Lunch (a lighter buffet at €29 or a fuller one at €34) can be added when you book. Outside food is not allowed. There is a separate resident rate for locals.

A few rules catch visitors out:

  • Booking is compulsory. QC says walk-ins are not admitted. Arrive within 30 minutes of your slot.
  • One entry only. You cannot leave and come back the same day.
  • Age 14 and up for day visitors. Hotel guests may bring children aged 5 and up into the pools with an adult; they cannot use saunas or steam rooms.
  • No entry during pregnancy, for day visitors or hotel guests.

Where to stay nearby

The QC Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi is on site, with rooms that open directly onto the spa circuit; guests use the spa from 3 p.m. on arrival to 11 a.m. on departure. QC also runs the QC Villa Bagni di Bormio nearby and the QC Hotel Bagni Vecchi at the old baths. Bormio town has a wide range of hotels and apartments, and Livigno is further up the SS301 over the Foscagno pass.

Other QC spas

Bormio is the QC destination for natural hot water. Some other QC sites are not hot springs at all, so check before you book: QC Spa Dolomiti heats cold mineral water from the Pucia spring, while QC Spa Garda and QC Spa Milano name no thermal source at all.

Safety notes

  • Hot water at altitude. Bormio is at over 1,200 m (3,900 ft). Drink water, keep soaks short, and step out if you feel dizzy.
  • Icy paths in winter. The outdoor circuit means walking between pools in a robe and slippers. Take it slowly when it is frozen.
  • Health questions. QC bars pregnant women from the circuit. If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, check with your doctor before using hot pools and saunas.
