What to expect

Kirishima Onsen, or Kirishima Onsenkyō, is a spa area on the southern slopes of the Kirishima volcanoes in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The tourism association counts nine separate hot spring areas, large and small, all between 600 and 850 m (about 2,000 to 2,800 ft). Their centre is Maruo, a crossroads village with a bus stop, the Kirishima Onsen Tourist Information Center, a few shops and the larger hotels. Steam rises from vents along the roadsides, and in cold weather you can see it from far down the valley.

This is not a town with public bathhouses on every corner. Day visitors bathe at the hotels and inns, most of which open their baths to non-guests for a few hours a day. The water is mostly sulfurous and often milky. Just below Maruo, hot spring water joins the stream at Maruo Falls, and the Maruo nature trail nearby passes what the association calls the oldest rock bath in Kirishima.

Kirishima City has other spa areas lower down: Myōken Onsen in the Amori River gorge (covered at /hot-springs/myoken-onsen-japan), Hinatayama, and Kirishima Jingū Onsenkyō around the shrine. This page covers the upper Kirishima Onsen area around Maruo.

Day baths

These are examples, with prices from the tourism association’s listings and hotel sites in 2026. Hours change with the day’s bookings, so call ahead.

  • Kirishima Kokusai Hotel (1 minute by car from Maruo, 0995-78-2621): more than nine kinds of bath, including indoor and open-air baths in milky simple sulfur water, a steam bath and a stone bath. The hotel says all its baths run on source-fed spring water, adjusted to about 104-106°F40-41°C in most tubs and about 108-109°F42-43°C in the small hot tub. Day bathing 11:00-15:00, last entry 14:00. ¥1,200 adults, ¥600 elementary school children, ¥300 children 3 and over.
  • Hotel Kirishima Castle (by the Shioyu Onsen bus stop, about 10 minutes’ walk from Maruo, 0995-78-2211): day bathing 15:30-19:00, ¥850 adults, ¥400 children.
  • Ryokojin Sanso (about 5 minutes by car from Maruo, 0995-78-2831): a hilltop inn at 700 m with views to Sakurajima on clear days. It has a large bath for ¥600 adults and ¥300 children, and three private open-air baths spread through its 50,000-tsubo (about 16 ha) natural forest for ¥1,200 adults and ¥600 children, used for 50 minutes at a time. The inn lists 12:00-15:00 for the large bath and 11:00-14:00 for the private baths as last reception times, and says times can change on the day.

The information center at Maruo keeps up-to-date details of which baths are taking day visitors.

Volcano alerts and road access

Check volcano status before any trip here. The Kirishima range is active.

  • Shinmoedake: the Japan Meteorological Agency lowered the alert from level 3 to level 2 (crater area restrictions) on October 17, 2025. Its bulletin of October 16, 2026 kept level 2. No eruption had been seen since September 8, 2025, but sulfur dioxide output was still several hundred tonnes a day, and the agency warns of large ballistic rocks up to about 2 km from the crater and pyroclastic flows up to about 1 km. Kirishima City enforces a no-entry zone of about 2 km under Article 63 of the Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act, with penalties for entering. The spa hotels around Maruo are outside it.
  • Ebino Kogen (Iozan): level 1 since December 6, 2023, but gas from the vents still limits Prefectural Route 1 (the Kobayashi Ebino Kogen Makizono line). As of January 29, 2026, the section from near the Koshidake trail entrance to the junction with Route 30 opened only to enclosed vehicles, 9:00-17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, and can close for gas or weather.
  • Trails: routes towards Shinmoedake, such as Nakadake to Shinmoedake and the Yunono trail, fall under the restrictions. Ask the trail managers before hiking. They include the Ministry of the Environment Ebino office (0984-33-1108) and the Kagoshima Prefecture nature conservation division (099-286-2617).

Kagoshima Prefecture posts road closures at its road information site. Earthquake closures on the Kyushu Expressway after the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake ended on August 14, 2026, when the Matsubase to Ebino section reopened.

Getting there

  • From Kagoshima Airport: about 30 minutes by car to Maruo.
  • From Kirishima Shrine: about 15 minutes by car.
  • From JR Kirishima-Onsen Station: about 20 minutes by car.
  • By bus: local buses stop at Maruo, right outside the tourist information center. Check current timetables at the airport or with the information center.

Most hotels have large car parks. Kirishima Kokusai Hotel lists 100 spaces and Hotel Kirishima Castle 150.

When to go

Kirishima is a year-round spa area. Autumn colour arrives on the mountain roads in November, and the tourism association posts colour reports on its site. Winter brings occasional snow and ice on the upper roads, and the cold makes the steam vents more striking. Summer is cooler up here than on the coast, and it is the main hiking season, subject to the volcano restrictions above.

The information center at Maruo is closed on Tuesdays and over New Year.

Prices and booking

Day bathing at the hotels needs no booking unless stated, but the hotels can turn away day visitors when busy. Bring a towel or expect to rent one. Overnight stays are the better way to use the baths, since most day-bath windows end mid-afternoon.

Kirishima Jingū Onsenkyō, the lower spa area near the shrine, sells the Nyūtō Kirifuda: ¥1,200 for three bath visits at its member inns, shareable between people, valid six months, sold at the Kirishima City Tourist Information Center (0995-57-1588). Its member baths include Sakura Sakura Onsen, known for its natural mud bath. The pass does not cover the Maruo hotels.

Onsen etiquette

  • Wash before entering the tubs and bathe naked in the gender-split baths.
  • Sulfur water discolours silver and some other metals. Kirishima Kokusai Hotel warns about this, so take jewellery off.
  • Tattoos: no published policy at the hotels above. Ask before you go.
  • Keep towels out of the water and keep noise down in shared baths.

Where to stay nearby

The Maruo hotels (Kirishima Kokusai Hotel, Hotel Kirishima Castle, Ryokojin Sanso and others) are the obvious base. Myōken Onsen, lower down in the Amori gorge, has small riverside inns. Kirishima Jingū Onsenkyō puts you near the shrine. Kagoshima Airport is about 30 minutes away, and Ibusuki further south is covered at /hot-springs/ibusuki-onsen-japan.

Safety notes

  • Volcanic gas: hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide collect near vents and in hollows. Obey all signs and closures, and do not linger near steaming ground.
  • Eruption alerts: check the Japan Meteorological Agency and Kirishima City before you go, especially if you plan to hike.
  • Heat: sulfur baths around 104-109°F40-43°C are tiring. Keep soaks short and drink water.
  • Mountain roads: fog is common, and ice is possible in winter on the upper roads.
