What to expect
Balçova Termal Otel is a big, institutional thermal complex in İzmir’s Balçova district, on the city’s western side. It is not a rustic bathhouse. Think of a hospital-grade spa with a hotel attached: a physical therapy and rehabilitation centre, doctors on staff, and a set of indoor thermal pools that day visitors can use for a two-hour session.
The site has a long history. The springs here were known as the Agamemnon Baths (Agamemnon Kaplıcaları), and the hotel tells the old legend that the Greek king Agamemnon sent soldiers wounded in the Trojan War to soak in them. The baths fell out of use in the late Roman and Byzantine period, were repaired after the Ottomans took İzmir in 1415, and were rebuilt in the 1980s by the İzmir Provincial Special Administration, first as a hotel and then as a treatment centre.
What you get today:
- Eight thermal pools of different sizes and temperatures. Two are women-only. The rest are mixed.
- Fifteen private bath rooms with thermal tubs, used mainly for treatments.
- Saunas, a steam room, a hamam and massage in the spa.
- A physical therapy centre offering balneotherapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, exercise therapy and paraffin treatments.
The hotel publishes no pool-by-pool temperature list, only that the eight pools differ in size and heat. Ask at the desk which pool runs warmest and start in a cooler one.
The hotel has had a long agreement with Norway’s health ministry. For decades it has treated around a thousand Norwegian rheumatism patients a year, so do not be surprised to hear Norwegian in the pools in winter.
What is closed: the hotel announced that the aquapark slides and its ordinary swimming pools (the semi-Olympic pool, the family pool and the other swimming pools) are closed indefinitely. The standard rooms in the main building are also out of service while renovation work goes on, so guests are put in the garden rooms. The thermal pools are not affected.
Getting there
The hotel is at Vali Hüseyin Öğütcen Caddesi No:16/1 in Balçova, west of İzmir’s Konak centre along the southern shore of the bay. It is inside the city, so the trip is a short taxi or bus ride from central İzmir. Check İzmir’s ESHOT buses and metro for current routes to Balçova.
From İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, a taxi or transfer is the simplest option. If you are driving, the hotel advertises free private parking.
Everything is on one site, so there is no walk beyond the car park and the hotel corridors. The hotel has rooms for disabled guests; ask about step-free access to the pools when you book.
When to go
The thermal pools are open all year. Autumn, winter and spring are the obvious seasons: İzmir summers are hot, and a warm indoor pool is more appealing on a cool, wet January day.
Weekday mornings are the quietest time for day visitors. Arrive early: the last entry for outside guests is 17:00, and the pools close at 18:30.
Prices and booking
Prices below come from the hotel’s own pages in October 2026. Turkish prices change often, sometimes more than once a year, so check before you go.
Day use of the thermal pools
- ₺1,250 per person for a 120-minute session
- ₺1,065 for retirees, seven days a week
- Pools open 08:00-18:30; last entry from outside 17:00; out of the building by 19:00
- The hotel says soaks should not go past two hours for health reasons
- Children aged 12 and under are not allowed in the thermal pools
Rooms (breakfast included)
- Single ₺4,350 per night
- Double ₺6,800 per night
- Children under 7 stay free; ages 7-12 pay 50% on an extra bed with their parents
- Guests under 18 cannot stay without a parent
Treatment packages: the hotel sells a non-residential therapy package with a doctor’s examination, basic tests, electrotherapy, local massage and thermal pool sessions (pool exercise, baths, jacuzzi and underwater massage). Package prices are not discounted. Call 444 76 11 and ask for the treatment desk.
Bring a swimsuit; the mixed pools are swimsuit only. Pool slippers are worth packing.
Bathing culture
Balçova runs more like a medical spa than a social bath. Many guests come for a course of soaks and therapy rather than a single visit, and the staff talk about the water in terms of treatment. Keep your voice down in the pools, shower before you get in, and follow the time limits.
The spa here has a hamam, as most Turkish thermal hotels do. A hamam is a hot steam room with a heated marble slab where you sweat, then get scrubbed with a coarse mitt (kese) and washed with soap foam. Wear a swimsuit or the cotton wrap (peştamal) that the spa hands out. In the two women-only pools, women can soak away from men, which many local guests prefer.
Where to stay nearby
The hotel itself is the obvious base, especially if you want to use the pools on consecutive days. Balçova and neighbouring Narlıdere have other hotels and plenty of restaurants. Central İzmir, a short taxi ride east, has the widest choice, from waterfront hotels in Alsancak to business hotels near Konak.
Safety notes
- Keep soaks short. The hotel caps day sessions at two hours and advises against going longer. Get out if you feel dizzy or your heart races.
- Health conditions: the treatment centre has doctors on site. If you have heart problems, high blood pressure or are pregnant, ask them before using the hotter pools.
- Wet floors: tiled pool decks and changing rooms get slippery. Wear pool slippers.
- No children 12 and under in the thermal pools.
Nearby stops worth adding
The Balçova Terapi Ormanı, a forest walking area the hotel promotes to its guests, is good for a stroll before or after a soak. İzmir’s Kordon waterfront, Kemeraltı bazaar and the Agora of Smyrna are all a short drive east. Day trips to Ephesus or the Çeşme peninsula, where the Şifne thermal hotel sits on its own bay, are easy from İzmir: see Çeşme Şifne Thermal Springs.
