What to expect
Yalova Termal is the old state spa of northwest Turkey, and it still feels like one. The baths sit at the bottom of a forested valley between two ridges, about 12 km (7.5 miles) inland from Yalova on the south shore of the Sea of Marmara. The operator says the complex covers about 3,600 dönüm (roughly 360 hectares) of forest and arboretum, and the whole valley is a first-degree natural, archaeological and historic protected site. Byzantine and Ottoman buildings stand between the hotels and the pool.
It is run by the Yalova Kaplıcaları İşletme İdaresi, part of the Turkish Ministry of Health, not by a private hotel group. That shows in the details: prices are posted openly, day visitors walk in without booking, and Ministry of Health staff and their families get half price on rooms outside peak days.
The water is a calcium-sulphate, fluoride mixed thermal mineral water with total mineralisation of about 1,500 mg per litre, according to the operator. It is clear, colourless and slightly sweet. In 1911 it won a gold medal at a spa competition in Rome as the “most beneficial” spring water, and the medal is on display at the entrance to the Termal Otel. The spa manager told DHA in January 2026 that the pools run at 100-104°F38-40°C.
The town around the spa, also called Termal, is a district of its own with many private thermal hotels. DHA counted 17 Ministry of Culture and Tourism certified properties and about 5,000 beds in the district in January 2026. This page covers the historic state-run complex.
The baths
The operator lists five places to soak:
- Açık Havuz (outdoor pool): The big open-air thermal pool, the one people photograph in the snow. A combined ticket gives 180 minutes here and in the Kurşunlu bath.
- Kurşunlu Banyo: A sauna-hamam whose origins the operator dates to the Byzantine period. It has its own 90-minute ticket.
- Valide Hamamı: A traditional Turkish bath built by Sultan Abdülmecid for his mother, Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, who is said to have found relief for her rheumatism here. It is the cheapest ticket on the list.
- Sultan Banyo: 26 private family cabins, each with a marble tub and a basin (kurna), rented by the hour. It opens 08:30-22:00, and there is a larger VIP room.
- Sıra Banyolar: Another row of private cabins, sold as the economy family option.
The Termal Otel adds an indoor thermal pool, family baths, two saunas and a massage room for hotel guests. Massage and kese (scrub) cost extra everywhere.

Bathing culture
Turkish thermal baths split along clear lines. In a hamam, men and women bathe separately. Most men wrap a peştamal, a thin cotton cloth, around the waist, and women usually wear a swimsuit bottom or a peştamal; full nudity is not the custom. Rinse before you get into any pool and keep soap at the basins. A kese mitt is for scrubbing off dead skin after you have sweated. Couples and families who want to bathe together rent a private cabin, which is what the Sultan Banyo and Sıra Banyolar are for. The outdoor pool is a normal swimsuit pool shared by everyone. The operator does not publish which hamam halls are men-only or women-only on which days, so ask at the ticket office.
Getting there
The operator’s own route notes:
- From Istanbul (European side): Fast ferry from Yenikapı to Yalova, with or without a car, about 1 hour 25 minutes to the spa in total. From Yalova, follow the Çınarcık road, then turn off for Termal.
- From Istanbul (Asian side): Drive over the Osmangazi Bridge, about 55 minutes. Fast ferries also run from Pendik to Yalova (about 1 hour 10 minutes in total) and car ferries from Eskihisar to Topçular (about 1 hour 20 minutes).
- From Bursa: About 1 hour via Gemlik and Orhangazi.
- From İzmit (Kocaeli): About 1 hour via Gölcük, Karamürsel and Altınova.
Without a car, take a Termal minibus or municipal bus from the Yalova ferry pier. The hotel has parking for 50 cars.
When to go
The spa is open all year. Winter is the classic season: people come to swim in the hot outdoor pool while snow falls. That is also when it fills up. DHA reported the Termal hotels almost fully booked before the January 2026 semester break, and bayram holidays draw full houses too. Weekdays from October to May give you hot water with fewer people, and weekday tickets are cheaper.
Where to stay nearby
The state complex has the Termal Otel, first opened in 1938 on Atatürk’s instructions and rebuilt to its original design in 2009 after damage forced its demolition in 1982. It has 8 suites and 54 standard rooms. There is also the Çınar Otel and a set of apartments. Termal district has many private thermal hotels, and Yalova town, 12 km (7.5 miles) away, has more choice.
Nearby stops worth adding
The operator points to walks around the Gökçedere dam lake and to the Sudüşen waterfall above the valley, plus village visits to Üvezpınar, Gökçedere and Akköy. If you are heading south, Bursa’s Ottoman bath quarter is about an hour away: see Çekirge Thermal Baths. Further west in Balıkesir are Gönen Thermal Springs and Güre Thermal Springs.
Safety notes
- Who should skip it: The operator advises against thermal treatment for people with a fever, pregnant women, people with tuberculosis, heart patients and anyone with a contagious illness.
- Session length: Cure programmes use soaks of 15 to 30 minutes. Keep pool sessions short, drink water and cool down between rounds.
- Wet marble: Hamam floors and pool edges are slippery. Wear slippers.
- Cold air, hot water: In winter, stepping from 104°F40°C water into freezing air is a shock. Dry off and dress quickly.
