What to expect
Gönen is a market town of about 75,000 people in the south Marmara region of Balıkesir Province, known in Turkey for three things: rice, leather and hot water. The springs rise in the town itself, and the Balıkesir culture and tourism directorate gives their temperature as 160-180°F71-82°C. The water is a fluoride-bearing mix of sodium, sulphate, chloride and bicarbonate. The operator puts total mineralisation at 1,796.9 mg per litre and holds a Ministry of Health licence dating from 2003.
The spa has a long history. Local accounts put it at about 3,000 years and served bathers under the Romans and Ottomans, and one theory derives the town’s name from an old word for hot spring. Evliya Çelebi, the 17th-century Ottoman travel writer, recorded that the governors of Bursa spent their summers here for the baths. For decades the spa was a municipal company, Gönen Kaplıcaları A.Ş. After a long closure for losses, the municipality leased it in November 2021 to Mutlular Grup for 15 years. The resort now trades as Mutlular Gönen Termal Resort.
What you get is a large, traditional Turkish thermal hotel rather than a design spa:
- Men’s and women’s indoor thermal pools. The main soaking pools are single-sex.
- Turkish hamams and saunas. Classic marble hamams alongside the pools.
- Private family pools. Couples and families rent these to soak together.
- An outdoor swimming pool, used mainly in summer.
- Thermal water in the rooms. Every room has thermal water on tap 24 hours a day, so you can run a mineral bath in the tub.
The resort also offers physiotherapy and hydrotherapy all year, after an examination by its doctor: underwater treatments, pool baths and injections.
The resort
The complex has two linked sections. The Yıldız section is a four-star hotel with 150 rooms and 324 beds, all with balconies, air conditioning, a minibar and a bathtub. The Park section, joined by a corridor, has two floors, 57 rooms and 118 beds, with garden-view balconies and two rooms adapted for guests with disabilities. Meals are open buffets in an 800-seat restaurant, with live music every evening, and a free coffee break in the lobby from 15:00 to 16:00. There are meeting halls, a children’s playroom, an adult games room and a gym, which guests use free of charge.
Getting there
- From Istanbul: The quickest route is the fast ferry from Yenikapı to Bandırma, about 105 minutes, then 44 km (27 miles) southwest to Gönen by car or bus. Driving all the way is about 290 km (180 miles).
- From Bandırma: About 44 km (27 miles), roughly 40 minutes.
- From Bursa: About 150 km (93 miles) west.
- From Balıkesir city: About 114 km (71 miles) by the resort’s figure.
- From Erdek: About 54 km (34 miles), useful if you are combining Gönen with the coast.
The resort is in the town centre, and the operator gives its phone line as 0266 762 18 40.
When to go
The springs are open all year. The operator points out that Gönen rarely gets very hot days, with summer highs mostly 77-86°F25-30°C from June to September, so the pools are usable in any season. Like most Turkish thermal hotels, it tends to fill up at weekends, in winter and during school and bayram holidays. A weekday visit between October and May gives you the best chance of a quiet pool. Summer suits families who want the outdoor pool too.
Prices and booking
Prices are set by the resort and change with the season. Book by phone or through its website. Stays are on a half-board basis, with breakfast and dinner as open buffets, and the operator says its quoted prices include VAT. The hamams, indoor thermal pools and outdoor pool are free for staying guests. Minibar use is extra.
The resort does not publish a day-visit price, and we could not confirm that it sells one. Call before you turn up. If you only want a soak, the municipality’s own spa is the better bet (see below).
Bathing culture
Gönen is a family resort in the Turkish tradition. In the single-sex pools, people wear a swimsuit, and in the hamam a swimsuit or the cotton peştamal. Nudity is not the custom. Shower before you get in and keep your voice down; some guests are here for a course of treatment rather than a holiday. Families and couples who want to bathe together hire a private family pool. In the hamam, lie on the heated marble slab to sweat, then wash at the basins.
Ekşidere Dağ Ilıcası
Gönen Municipality runs a second, smaller spa in the hills: Ekşidere Dağ Ilıcası, 13 km (8 miles) from the town centre, with regular buses from Gönen. The provincial tourism directorate gives its water as 100-115°F38-46°C. It has an indoor cure pool, a Turkish hamam and separate pool hours for men and women. The municipality published its 2026 pool hours, bus times and lodging prices (Kanarya, Bülbül Yuvası, Beyaz Evler and bungalows) in January 2026. It closed for maintenance from February 19 to March 18, 2026, so check for notices before you go.
Where to stay nearby
The resort is the place to stay if you want thermal water in your room. The provincial directorate notes three municipality-licensed lodgings next to the spa as cheaper alternatives. Ekşidere Dağ Ilıcası rents rooms and bungalows. Bandırma, 44 km (27 miles) away, and Erdek on the Kapıdağ peninsula have plenty of hotels.
Safety notes
- Very hot source: The springs emerge at up to 180°F82°C. In your room, run cold water first and test the bath before you get in.
- Short soaks: Keep pool sessions short, drink water and get out if you feel faint. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure, see a doctor before a cure.
- Slippery floors: Mineral water makes tiles and marble slick. Wear slippers.
- Earthquakes: Gönen sits on an active fault and was badly damaged in a magnitude 7.3 earthquake in 1953. Note the emergency exits in your hotel.
Nearby stops worth adding
The Ömer Seyfettin statue in the town centre honours Gönen’s best-known son, a pioneer of the Turkish short story. Lake Manyas (Kuşcenneti National Park) near Bandırma is a major bird site. The coast at Erdek makes an easy summer add-on.
