What to expect

Tiszaújváros is a young industrial town on the right bank of the Tisza, built after the Second World War around a chemical plant and power station, about 35 km (22 miles) south-east of Miskolc. Its bath, the Tiszaújvárosi Gyógy- és Strandfürdő (Medicinal and Beach Bath), is the town’s leisure centre, and locals and bus stops simply call it the Termálfürdő. It is run for the town and priced with residents in mind, but visitors are welcome.

There are two halves. The medicinal bath (gyógyfürdő) is the indoor part, open all year, with three hot medicinal pools, an outdoor medicinal pool, a sauna area and a treatment department with an on-site rheumatologist. The strand is the summer half: a big lawn with a 50 m pool, wave pool, slides and children’s pools.

The water rises from about 1,200 m (3,900 ft). The bath gives the source temperature as 149°F65°C; the Hungarian Wikipedia article on the town gives 135°F57°C, so treat the figure loosely. Both agree on the chemistry: a fairly salty sodium chloride and hydrogen-carbonate water. The bath markets it for joint, gynaecological and urological complaints. We make no medical claims.

  • Wave pool: 79°F26°C.
  • Adventure pool: 81°F27°C, with a current channel, a hill slide and jets.

  • Medicinal pool with water features: 93°F34°C.
  • Castle pool (Vármedence): 86°F30°C, with a water mushroom, for children up to 10 only. Adults may not use it.

The strand also has a playground, beach volleyball and football courts, and outdoor fitness equipment in the shade by the adventure pool.

The wellness area has a Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna, a bio sauna with light therapy, a steam cabin, an ice-crush station, a plunge pool and a rest room with loungers. Massage, pedicure and a solarium are available too.

Getting there

The bath is at Szederkényi út 12, next to the town’s Sport Park, with several free car parks around it.

  • From Budapest: about 177 km (110 miles), roughly 2 hours. Take the M3 motorway east, leave near Polgár and take road 351 north into town.
  • From Miskolc: about 35 km (22 miles), 35-40 minutes on the M30 and main road 35.
  • From Mezőkövesd: about 51 km (32 miles), 40 minutes.
  • From Debrecen: about 71 km (44 miles), under an hour.

Tiszaújváros is on a branch railway from Nyékládháza, on the Budapest to Miskolc main line, so trains are possible but slow. Town buses stop at Szederkényi utca Termálfürdő, right by the bath.

When to go

The medicinal bath is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The 2026 calendar:

  • April 13-30: closed for spring maintenance.
  • May 30 to June 12: outdoor adventure pool open (pre-season).
  • June 13 to August 30: full strand open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • August 31 to September 20: outdoor adventure pool only (post-season).
  • September 21 to October 2: closed for autumn maintenance.
  • November 1 and December 24: closed. January 1, 2027: 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Outside summer, an evening visit is the best value: the 5 p.m. ticket is about a third cheaper than a full day and you still get three hours in the water.

Prices and booking

Day tickets are sold at the desk; there is no booking. The bath had its off-season (szezonon kívüli) list posted in October 2026. Full day / from 2 p.m. / from 5 p.m.:

  • Adult: HUF 5,800 / 4,600 / 3,800.
  • Student: HUF 4,900 / 3,900 / 3,400.
  • Senior: HUF 4,500 / 3,600 / 3,000.
  • Family (two adults, two children under 14): HUF 17,300 / 13,900 / 11,400.
  • Under 4: free.

Holders of a Tiszaújváros address card pay HUF 1,800 for an adult full day. A ten-visit adult pass costs HUF 49,400. Extras: sauna day ticket HUF 4,000, sauna sheet HUF 300, locker HUF 500 (free with a pass or the town card), valuables box HUF 500, solarium HUF 2,500 for 18 minutes. Guests registered with the OTP Bank discount programme get 5% back when paying by card. The bath says its prices are for guidance and may change, and the summer season has its own list, so check before a summer trip.

Bathing culture

Like most Hungarian town baths, this is a place where people spend a whole afternoon. Change, shower, then alternate a spell in a hot medicinal pool with a rest on a lounger or a swim in a cooler pool. Most regulars keep each medicinal soak to 15 or 20 minutes. Keep your head above the water in the medicinal pools, and swim lengths in the 50 m pool rather than in the hot pools. A swim cap is wise for the lap pool.

Discounts are common and depend on paperwork: bring a student card or pension card if you want the reduced price. Locals with the town card get far lower prices than visitors, which is normal in Hungarian municipal baths.

Where to stay nearby

The Termál Kemping at Szederkényi út 53 is right next to the bath and open from June 13 to August 31, 2026. It has 200 tent and caravan pitches and 10 air-conditioned 32-square-metre apartments for up to five people, with a shared kitchen, washing machine, fire pits and Wi-Fi. In 2026 a tent pitch cost HUF 14,400 a night for one person and HUF 19,900 for two, a caravan pitch HUF 15,800 or 21,800, and an apartment from HUF 34,200 (one person) to HUF 61,500 (five). Dogs are HUF 1,000 a night, and the tourist tax (IFA) is HUF 250 per person per night. Each night includes a day ticket to the bath.

Outside the camping season, look for hotels in Tiszaújváros itself or in Miskolc, 35 km (22 miles) away. From Miskolc you can also visit the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath, and the sulphurous Zsóry bath in Mezőkövesd is about 40 minutes west. Tokaj, about 58 km (36 miles) north-east, makes a good wine-country base.

Safety notes

  • Heat: The round pool reaches 104°F40°C. Keep soaks short and get out slowly.

  • Children: Slides are off limits under 110 cm, and the castle pool is for under-10s only.
  • Sun: On the summer strand, bring a hat and sun cream and take breaks in the shade.
