What to expect

The Cave Bath at Miskolctapolca is a thermal bath built into natural caves in the limestone hillside on the southwest edge of Miskolc. Instead of a single pool hall you get a series of rock chambers linked by water-filled passages, with natural rock formations around you and low, atmospheric lighting. It is one of the most unusual bathing experiences in Hungary.

The water is warm rather than hot. The cave’s thermal water is close to 86°F30°C, and the operator lists the cave halls at 86-90°F30-32°C. That makes it a place to swim slowly from hall to hall, not to sit still in steaming water. The thermal relaxation pool and thermal swimming pool in the main Bath Hall are warmer, at 91-95°F33-35°C, and have massage jets.

Above ground there is a modern bath building, a Sauna Park and, in summer, an outdoor area with more pools. The bath is in Miskolctapolca, a leafy resort district of Miskolc with a park, a boating lake and other baths.

The 2024 fire and the 2026 reopening

A fire on September 6, 2024 burned the wing that held the medical treatments and damaged the covered bath. The covered bath stayed shut for nearly two years. The outdoor pools, known as the Kagyló (Shell) beach, reopened in summer 2025, but the caves did not. The government put HUF 1.3 billion into the restoration, which covered the roof structure, electrics and damaged bath areas.

The reopening slipped several times. A price list starting August 20, 2026 and the bath’s own “renewed” homepage show that it is open again. One part is still missing: the aquatherapy wing, where weight baths and physiotherapy covered by Hungarian social security were given, is marked temporarily closed. A June 2026 report said rebuilding it was not in the current plans and would be a separate project.

The pools

The operator lists:

  • Old Cave Pool and Bath Hall: 86°F30°C, the central space of the bath, with massage jets and natural rock.
  • Thermal relaxation pool and thermal swimming pool: 91-95°F33-35°C.
  • Bridge Hall: 90°F32°C, with a bridge spanning the pool.
  • Star Hall: 90°F32°C, with atmospheric lighting.
  • Roman Hall: 90°F32°C.
  • Outdoor pools (summer only): the Shell Pool with hydromassage jets and neck showers, a swimming pool, a lakeside adventure pool with whirlpool seats, and three children’s pools, all at 84-90°F29-32°C.
  • Sauna Park: six saunas (Finnish, steam and infrared), a plunge pool and rest areas.

The Star, Roman and Bridge halls were added in a major redevelopment between 1998 and 2005.

Getting there

Miskolctapolca lies about 6 km (4 miles) southwest of central Miskolc as the crow flies. The bath’s address is Pazár István sétány 1, 3519 Miskolc-Tapolca. From Budapest, take the M3 motorway northeast toward Miskolc, then follow signs for Tapolca from the city’s southwestern exits. Local buses run from central Miskolc to the Tapolca resort area. Miskolc has direct trains from Budapest.

When to go

The cave halls are open all year, and in winter they are at their best: the warm caves feel cosy when it is cold outside. The outdoor pools only open in the summer season, and that is also when the bath is at its busiest, especially on weekends and during school holidays. Arrive at opening time on a weekday for the quietest passages.

From December 24, 2026 to January 1, 2027 the bath runs holiday hours: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 31, and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on January 1. The boating lake opens Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Rules and bathing culture

Swimsuits are worn throughout. Street shoes are banned within 5 m of the pools, and non-slip pool sandals are strongly recommended. No glass within 5 m of the pools. Anyone visibly drunk is turned away, and alcohol is banned in the Sauna Park. Children under 14 must be supervised in the water, children under 3 need waterproof swim nappies, and under-4s cannot use the saunas. Saunas close to new users 30 minutes before closing. Shower before you get in, and keep the noise down in the caves, where sound carries.

History

Warm springs have drawn people here for centuries. A Benedictine abbey stood on the site from the late 14th to the early 16th century. A bath was restored in 1711 and a wooden bathhouse is recorded in 1743. Miskolctapolca was declared a health resort in 1934, and the bath complex built between 1939 and 1941 opened on May 28, 1941, set on 212 larch piles driven into the marshy ground. Its glass dome dates from 1941 and the original mechanism still works. The first cave section opened in 1959.

Where to stay nearby

There is no lodging inside the bath, but the Miskolctapolca resort area has hotels and guesthouses within walking distance. Central Miskolc has more choice. Lillafüred, in the Bükk hills about 10 km (6 miles) to the northwest as the crow flies, is a popular second base.

Safety notes

  • Cave sections: Rock walls and ceilings are close in places. Move slowly and watch your head.
  • Slippery rock: Floors and steps are wet stone. Wear non-slip sandals.
  • Enclosed spaces: If caves make you uneasy, stay in the main Bath Hall and the outdoor pools.
  • Health limits: The house rules bar people with fever, infections or seizure conditions, and list conditions such as heart disease and varicose veins as reasons not to use the sauna.
