What to expect

Therme Laa sits on the edge of Laa an der Thaya, a small town in the Weinviertel, Lower Austria’s wine country, a few kilometres from the Czech border. It is a modern resort with three parts on one site: the public thermal spa, a 4-star superior hotel, and the adults-only Silent Spa, plus a newer group of private Silent Villas beside a bathing pond. VAMED Vitality World runs it, the same group behind Therme Wien and St. Martins.

The public spa is the part most visitors come for. The operator describes about 7,800 m² of water world with five pools, three sauna areas and more than 500 loungers. It is aimed squarely at families as well as couples, with a long indoor slide, a shallow children’s pool and a play area upstairs.

The water

The water is genuine thermal water. The Laa Thermal Nord I medicinal spring, a sodium chloride iodine mineral thermal spring, fills every pool in the public spa. The operator gives its temperature at the outlet as 108°F42°C, its flow as 6.3 litres a second and its pH as 7.36. It is treated so it meets the Austrian bathing hygiene law and the drinking water rules.

The pools listed by Therme Laa:

  • Indoor thermal pool: 91-93°F33-34°C, with a current channel and massage benches.
  • Massage pool (outdoor): 91-93°F33-34°C, with bubble loungers, gush showers and massage walls.
  • Brine pool (outdoor): 95-97°F35-36°C, the warmest pool, with underwater music.
  • Active pool (outdoor): for swimming and exercise. The operator does not publish its temperature.
  • Fantasia slide: 90 m long under an artificial starry sky, with a traffic light at the top.

There is also a children’s pool only 30 cm deep, with a small slide and a spouting turtle. The operator publishes a water analysis for each pool on its website.

Sauna culture

The main sauna world follows Austrian custom. The house rules say it is run as a nude area “in old sauna tradition” and that swimwear is only allowed in the textile sauna in the public spa. Guests under 14 are not admitted. Sit on a towel, shower before your first round, and keep quiet in the relaxation rooms.

The sauna world includes a Loft sauna (up to 176°F80°C) with aroma infusions, a Weinviertel sauna built like an old wine cellar (up to 126°F52°C), a Zirben (Swiss stone pine) sauna and a Teich (pond) sauna with a panoramic window (both up to 194°F90°C), and a 113°F45°C steam bath. The outdoor sauna garden was relandscaped in 2023 by the Kittenberger garden company.

For families there is the Familien-Textilsauna, which the operator calls Austria’s first textile family sauna. It is included in the spa ticket, swimsuits are worn, and it is meant for parents with children under 14.

Getting there

The address is Thermenplatz 1, 2136 Laa an der Thaya. The public spa and the Silent Spa and hotel have separate access roads, so follow the signs carefully.

  • By train: the S2 runs from Wien Meidling, Wien Mitte, Wien Nord and Floridsdorf to Laa an der Thaya. The operator says the trip takes about an hour, and the station is about 200 m from the spa.
  • By car from Vienna: about 85 km (53 miles), roughly an hour and 15 minutes. Either take the A22 to Korneuburg West and the B6 via Ernstbrunn, or take the A5 via Wolkersdorf toward Mistelbach, exit at Schrick/Mistelbach and continue on the B46.
  • From Horn: follow the B45 to Laa.
  • From Brno (Czech Republic): about 64 km (40 miles), roughly an hour.

Silent Spa guests have their own free car park with a barrier at the entrance. There are paid EV chargers under the carports.

When to go

The spa is open every day, including most holidays. Weekends and Lower Austrian school holidays are the busiest times, and the operator sells online tickets that guarantee entry “even at full capacity”, which tells you it does fill up.

For a quieter visit, go on a weekday morning. Mondays outside holidays bring one free child per paying adult (Kids-Day), and on Tuesdays seniors get a “1 + 1 Best Ager” offer with a €5 restaurant credit. The new late ticket from 7 p.m., with the sauna included, is the cheapest way in.

The website has a revision page for planned maintenance closures. In October 2026 it listed no further works for the year.

Where to stay nearby

The resort’s own hotel is on site at Thermenplatz 3, and the Silent Villas offer private villas with their own spa beside a pond. Hotel packages combine rooms with Silent Spa days. Otherwise the town of Laa an der Thaya has guesthouses, and Mistelbach, about 25 km (16 miles) south, is the nearest larger town.

Nearby stops worth adding

The Weinviertel is known for its cellar lanes, rows of small wine-press houses dug into loess hillsides; the resort runs a Weinviertel brunch and Advent events that lean on that theme.

Safety notes

  • Iodine and brine: if you have a thyroid condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before long soaks in iodine-rich water. The operator lists health benefits but no contraindications on its pool page.
  • Children: the children’s pool is shallow and easy to watch, but parents are responsible for their children.
  • Heat: the 97°F36°C brine pool and the 194°F90°C saunas are tiring together. Drink water between rounds.
