What to expect
Bükfürdő is the spa district of Bük, a small town in Vas County close to the Austrian border, and the bath at its centre is one of the largest in Hungary. The operator’s pool page lists more than 30 pools, across a medicinal wing, an adventure bath, a summer strand and a sauna world. It is a full-day place: people come for the medicinal halls in the morning, the adventure pools after lunch and the saunas in the evening.
The medicinal water. Bük’s water is unusual. The operator classes it as alkaline hydrogen-carbonate water with high calcium, magnesium and fluoride content, and gives a total mineral content of 15,832 mg/l for the Szent Kelemen spring, which is very high by Hungarian standards. Four wells bring it to the surface.
The pools. The indoor medicinal halls are where you soak. The large indoor medicinal pools run at 97-100°F36-38°C and 93-97°F34-36°C, and the small indoor medicinal pool is the hottest at 99-102°F37-39°C. The Szent Kelemen pool, the original 1962 pool, is 93-97°F34-36°C, and the outdoor medicinal pool 91-95°F33-35°C. The Four Seasons pools hold medicinal water at 88-95°F31-35°C, and there is a weight bath for treatments.
The adventure side has an experience pool and a bubble pool at 91-95°F33-35°C, a children’s pool, a heart-shaped pool and the Shark Cave paddling area. In summer the strand opens with a big swimming pool at 72-79°F22-26°C, the Acapulco pool, a dolphin pool for small children, a basketball pool and a giant bubble pool. There are indoor and outdoor slides.
The sauna world is a separate, textile-free area with ten types of cabin, from a very hot sauna to a tepidarium and an ice room, plus an outdoor experience pool, a jacuzzi, plunge pools at 61-64°F16-18°C and a Kneipp pool.
History
Bük was not looking for water. In 1957 oil prospectors drilled the Bük-1 well to 1,282 m, found no oil or gas and sealed it with concrete, and hot mineral water then started forcing its way to the surface. Villagers first bathed in a ditch that carried the water away. The first partly covered thermal pool, the Szent Kelemen, opened on August 19, 1962, and the health ministry declared the water medicinal in 1965. A covered bath building came in 1972, slides and an outdoor pool in the 1980s, and new pools and play areas in 2016.
Getting there
The bath is at Termál tér 1, 9740 Bük, in the Bükfürdő resort area east of the town centre.
- By car: Bük is about 21 km (13 miles) north-east of Szombathely, 37 km (23 miles) south of Sopron and roughly 170 km (106 miles) west of Budapest as the crow flies. Vienna is about 97 km (60 miles) away in a straight line.
- On foot: Termál tér is the central square of the resort area, so the hotels and the campsite around it are within walking distance of the bath.
When to go
Weekdays from Monday to Thursday are the basic-price days and the quietest. Fridays to Sundays and school holidays are premium days. In 2026 that covers the autumn break from October 23 to November 1 and December 25 to January 3, 2027.
The outdoor strand pools are seasonal, from spring to autumn, so a winter visit is mostly indoor. On October 1, 2026 the bath said renovation of about 1,800 m² of changing rooms had finished, with two new changing blocks. Opening hours can change at short notice, and the operator notes that.

Bathing culture
The pools are swimsuit-only, but the sauna world is not: take your swimsuit off and sit on your sheet, which comes with the sauna ticket. The bath runs infusion sessions (felöntések), some at extra cost; if you join one, stay for the whole round. Speak quietly in the saunas. Shower before entering any pool, wear flip-flops, and bring a swim cap for the lap pools. In the medicinal halls, people soak, they do not swim lengths.
Where to stay nearby
The Bükfürdő resort area is built around the bath, with large spa hotels such as the Hunguest Bük and the four-star Thermal Camping Bükfürdő, whose guests have special access on Christmas Eve. Bük town, Kőszeg and Szombathely add more options.
Other western Hungarian baths in reach: Sárvár Spa and Wellness Centre, about 18 km (11 miles) away as the crow flies, the Várkertfürdő in Pápa and, further south, Lake Hévíz.

- Age limits: under-14s are barred from the medicinal pools and the sauna world, and 14 to 18-year-olds may use the sauna only with an adult.
- Slippery floors: the complex is large and the floors are wet; wear flip-flops.
