What to expect
Asama Onsen is a quiet residential hot spring town in the foothills on the northeastern edge of Matsumoto. It is not a dramatic mountain onsen. Think a few streets of ryokan, small shops and bathhouses on a gentle slope, with views west to the Northern Alps on clear days, and Matsumoto Castle about 10 minutes away by car. That closeness is the point: you can spend the day in the castle town and be in hot water half an hour later.
The local ryokan cooperative traces the town back about 1,300 years and links it to a hot spring called Tsukama mentioned in the Nihon Shoki. In the Edo period the first lord of the Matsumoto domain set up a private bath here, the Goten-yu, and the castle lords visited. In the Meiji era the town drew writers and artists, including the poet Yosano Akiko and the painter Takehisa Yumeji.
The water is an alkaline simple spring, clear and nearly odourless. The cooperative lists a source temperature of 121°F49.7°C and a mixed flow of about 1,506 litres a minute. It says Asama has some of the largest hot spring volumes in Nagano Prefecture, and because the source is about 122°F50°C, many inns offer fully free-flowing (kakenagashi) baths without adding water or heat.
The day baths
- Hot Plaza Asama (3-16-3 Asama Onsen) is the main day facility; the ryokan cooperative’s office is in the same building. It has large indoor baths for men and women, an outdoor bath, a 194°F90°C dry sauna, a cold plunge, a 45-mat rest room upstairs and a free free-flowing footbath at the entrance. Shampoo and body soap are provided; razors, towels and toothbrushes are sold. There are 44 free parking spaces. Open 10:00 to midnight, with last entry and footbath use until 23:00. Closed on Tuesdays (open on holidays and closed the next day instead), but open over New Year, Golden Week and Obon. The 26th of each month is “furo no hi” (bath day), with double points on the loyalty card.
- Biwa no Yu (Yuyuan Biwa no Yu, 3-26-1 Asama Onsen) stands on the site of the old Goten-yu attendants’ post. It has two large baths with cypress outdoor baths, bubble baths, saunas and cold plunges; the men’s and women’s sides swap weekly. It also has two private outdoor baths, Rakusai and Yuan, a café and a reservation-only Japanese restaurant. Open 9:00 to 21:00, last entry 20:00, closed on Mondays (the next day when Monday is a holiday). It raised its adult price from ¥800 to ¥900 on October 1, 2025. Towels are ¥200 to buy and bath towels ¥200 to rent.
- Senki no Yu (3-4-22 Asama Onsen) is the best-known local bath, a short walk uphill from the Yusaka bus stop, with an old-fashioned public bath feel. ¥400, open 6:30 to 20:00, closed on irregular days. It is a basic neighbourhood bath, so bring your own towel and soap.

The Yokota-Shindai loop lines from the bus terminal stop at Asama Onsen Iriguchi, about an 8-minute walk away, and run later (last departure 22:00 on weekdays, 21:55 at weekends).

When to go
Asama works all year. Autumn brings clear Alpine views and the town’s festivals, including a torch festival and a new-soba festival. Winter is cold and dry in Matsumoto, good for an evening soak. Summer is warm, and the town makes a comfortable, cheaper base for Kamikochi, which closes from mid-November to mid-April.

Overnight guests in Matsumoto, including Asama, pay an accommodation tax that began on June 1, 2026: ¥200 per person per night until May 31, 2029 (¥100 for the city and ¥100 for Nagano Prefecture), rising to ¥300 after that. It applies only when the room-only rate is ¥6,000 or more before tax.
Onsen etiquette
The public baths are separated by sex and bathing is naked. Wash before getting in, keep your towel out of the water and tie up long hair. Hot Plaza Asama asks that children under elementary school age come with a guardian, and does not admit people who are drunk, have contagious skin conditions, or bring pets. At a small local bath like Senki no Yu, most bathers are regulars: be quiet, and do not run cold water into the bath without asking.
Where to stay nearby
Asama has a good spread of ryokan, from long-established inns to the Matsumoto Jujo book-hotel complex, which includes the Koyanagi ryokan founded in 1686. The ryokan cooperative’s site lists member inns. Central Matsumoto, around 20 minutes away by bus, has chain hotels near the station.
Safety notes
- Heat: at about 122°F50°C at the source, the water is cooled before it reaches the baths, but inn baths that run straight from the source can be hot. Test before you get in.
- Sauna and cold plunge: take it slowly, especially after drinking.
- Late buses: the last direct bus to the town leaves Matsumoto Station at 18:45. Check return times before you settle in for a late soak.
Nearby stops worth adding
