  • Six springs deliver 10 to 17 million litres a day of natural thermal water at 77-84°F25-29°C, and it fills every thermal pool in the resort.
  • The play pools and the outdoor thermal pool are kept at 90-93°F32-34°C, a few degrees warmer than the springs.
  • The Thermal-Urquellbecken, the original spring pool at the spa centre, has been in use since Roman times and has its own ticket desk for day visitors.
  • The sauna rooms are nude only, and the sauna world is for ages 16 and up.

What to expect

Warmbad is a spa quarter on the southern edge of Villach in Carinthia, at the foot of the Dobratsch (Villacher Alpe). It is not a single pool but a small resort run by the family-owned Gesundheits- und Thermenresort Warmbad Villach, which has been in business for more than 220 years. It includes three hotels, a spa medical centre with rehabilitation clinics, and two places a day visitor can soak:

  • KärntenTherme: the modern public thermal spa, opened in summer 2012, with pools, slides, a sauna world and a gym on four levels.
  • Thermal-Urquellbecken: the original spring pool at the Kurzentrum, next door. It survived the rebuild and is linked to the hotel by direct corridors.

This listing covers both. Most visitors come for the KärntenTherme; the Urquellbecken is the quieter, more traditional option.

The water

This is natural thermal water, but warm rather than hot. The operator says six springs in the resort produce between 10 and 17 million litres a day at 77-84°F25-29°C, and that this water fills all the thermal swimming pools of the hotels, the KärntenTherme and the medical centre.

Because the springs are cooler than body temperature, the KärntenTherme warms some pools further:

  • Fun pools and the Crazy River: 90-93°F32-34°C.
  • Outdoor thermal pool: 90-93°F32-34°C.
  • 25 m sports pool: 79-82°F26-28°C.

Inside there is also an indoor thermal pool with a grotto and bubble loungers, a whirlpool, a small children’s area with shallow pools, and slides. Outside, a neck shower pours onto your shoulders. The Romans already used the springs: the spa centre displays finds from the Roman period, including a figure the operator identifies as the spring goddess.

Sauna culture

The KärntenTherme’s SPA area spreads over two levels and is for guests aged 16 and over. The sauna rules say you may only be in the sauna rooms unclothed and must sit on a towel large enough for your whole body. Swimsuits are worn in the pools.

The sauna world includes a separate women’s sauna area, a bio or soft sauna, what the operator calls Carinthia’s largest hamam (soap-foam massages cost extra), a brine steam bath, two infrared cabins and two outdoor Finnish saunas on a terrace with an outdoor whirlpool. On full-moon evenings the sauna stays open late for a Saunanacht, and the evening sauna ticket is not valid then.

Getting there

The KärntenTherme is at Kadischenallee 25, 9504 Warmbad-Villach.

  • From Villach centre: about 4 km (2.5 miles), under 10 minutes by car.
  • From Klagenfurt: about 44 km (27 miles), just over half an hour on the A2 motorway.
  • From Ljubljana: about 98 km (61 miles), roughly 1 hour 10 minutes via the Karawanken tunnel.
  • From Udine: about 123 km (76 miles), roughly 1 hour 30 minutes on the A23 and A2.

By train, the S2 of the Carinthian S-Bahn stops at Villach Warmbad station, and regional and city buses serve the quarter. There is a large car park by the spa and a multi-storey garage. Validate your ticket at the cash desk for the reduced rate: €2.80 for 4 hours, €4.20 for 8 hours, €8.10 up to 13 hours. EV charging costs 39 cents per kWh.

When to go

The KärntenTherme is open every day. Hours are longer in winter (October to April) than in summer, and the whole spa closes for its annual maintenance, in 2027 from June 14 to 27. Some events close parts of it: in 2026 the sports pool was booked for a swimming championship on November 14 and 15 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Weekends, school holidays and rainy summer days are busiest. For a quiet swim, come for early swimming on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. or evening swimming after 8 p.m., both at reduced prices. The Urquellbecken has shorter hours at weekends (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Prices and booking

The 2026/27 KärntenTherme list gives “from” prices, so expect more at busy times:

  • Day ticket, pools only: adults €33, teens 13 to 15 €22.50, children 4 to 12 €17.90.
  • Family day ticket (1-2 adults, up to 5 children): adults €28.70, children €13.70, teens €16.20.
  • 3 hours, pools only: adults €26, teens €16.20, children €13.70. The fourth hour costs €2 extra.
  • Pools and sauna (16+): day €46, 3 hours €39.
  • Evening from 5 p.m.: pools €26.20, pools and sauna €31.50.
  • Early or late swim: adults €15, children and teens €7.70.
  • Sauna supplement: €14.
  • Rentals: towel €6.50, bathrobe €9.50.

Pupils from 16, apprentices and students up to 25 and people with a disability get 20% off. Seniors get a weekly Thursday deal with lunch for €35. The operator does not publish a separate price for the Urquellbecken on the KärntenTherme site; call its ticket desk on +43 4242 3001 1290.

Where to stay nearby

The resort’s own hotels are the Hotel Warmbaderhof (5-star), the Thermenhotel Karawankenhof (4-star) and the ThermenParkHotel Josefinenhof, all in the spa quarter. Villach itself, 4 km (2.5 miles) away, has more hotels, and Lake Faak (Faaker See), about 11 km (7 miles) east, has lakeside guesthouses and campsites.

Nearby stops worth adding

The Kurpark is where the Gailtaler Höhenweg (trail 229) ends and the Julius Kugy Alpine Trail passes through, so a walk toward the Dobratsch Nature Park combines well with a soak. In the woods near Warmbad, the Maibachl is a seasonal stream that only flows after heavy rain; people bathe in a pool dug in its bed when it runs.

Safety notes

  • Water temperature: 79-82°F26-28°C in the sports pool feels cool after the warmer pools. Children can get cold quickly.
  • Medical spa: the Urquellbecken is part of a medical centre. If you are there for therapy, follow your doctor’s plan for soak times.
  • Sauna: the sauna world is for adults 16 and over; drink water between rounds.
