What to expect
Terme di Stigliano sits in a wooded valley in the comune of Canale Monterano, in the Tuscia area of northern Lazio, about 50 km from Rome. Hot sulphurous water has come out of the ground here for a very long time. The site was used in Etruscan times, and the Romans built a temple and a bath complex they called Aquae Apollinares, after Apollo the healer. Another Roman name, Thermae Stygianae, linked the marshy water to the river Styx. Pliny the Elder mentioned soldiers stopping here on their way home.
Today the place is a four-star hotel with 40 rooms set in a park of about 20 hectares, and the Italian national tourism board lists five thermal springs on the property. The main building is an 18th-century mansion put up by the Altieri princes on top of the Roman remains. The resort also runs a restaurant, Il Ninfeo, a small private church and a bamboo grove with a lounge.
For a visitor, there are two separate experiences. The thermal park is the outdoor part: two panoramic ponds of thermal water, a larger thermal pool, a sensory thermal tub on a terrace by the river, a cold Belvedere pool and a semi-Olympic freshwater pool. The Helius Day Spa is the indoor part, with a sauna, a salt room, an infrared room, an indoor whirlpool pool and a sweat cave styled as a Roman grotto. The hotel’s own Olympus Spa is for overnight guests only.
The water
HIMETOP, a university heritage project on Italian thermal sites, lists three main springs at Stigliano: Bagno Grande at about 102°F39°C, Fangaia at about 131°F55°C and Bagnarello, also called the Grotta, at about 140°F60°C. The water carries sulphur, iodine and chlorine, and you will smell it. The resort does not publish soaking temperatures for each pond, so expect warm rather than scalding water in the outdoor ponds and test each one before you settle in.
The resort describes the Venus pool in the Olympus area as heated salt water, so not everything you swim in here is straight spring water. The ponds in the thermal park are the part fed by the thermal springs.

Getting there
Drive. From Rome, the trip is about 55 km (34 miles) and takes around 75 minutes, heading north-west past Lake Bracciano. The address is Via Bagni di Stigliano 2, 00060 Canale Monterano (RM). From the town of Bracciano it is about 16 km (10 miles), roughly 20 minutes; from Canale Monterano itself it is under 10 minutes. From Fiumicino airport allow about an hour and a half.
The last stretch is on small country roads. Use the resort’s map link or a satellite navigator with the full address, since the hamlet is called Bagni di Stigliano and is easy to miss.
When to go
The outdoor ponds are the reason to come, and the resort opens them only when the weather and outdoor temperature allow. That makes late spring to early autumn the safest bet. Weekdays are cheaper and quieter than weekends, when Romans drive out for the day.
Winter can still work if you plan for the indoor Helius spa and treat the outdoor ponds as a bonus. For hotel guests, the resort says the warm areas of the Olympus Spa close Monday to Thursday from November 3 to November 30, with free Helius access offered instead.
Where to stay nearby
The obvious choice is the resort itself, the Grand Hotel Terme di Stigliano, with 40 rooms from classic doubles to junior suites. Staying overnight gets you into the Olympus Spa as well.
Otherwise, Bracciano and the villages around Lake Bracciano, about 20 minutes away, have plenty of hotels and guesthouses. Canale Monterano is closer but small. Rome is close enough for a day trip if you have a car.
Safety notes
- Hot water: some springs here come out at 131-140°F55-60°C. Stick to the pools the staff open to bathers and do not climb into channels or fountains.
- Sulphur: the smell is normal. Take off silver jewellery, which can tarnish in sulphur water.
- Short soaks: keep each session short and drink water between dips, especially on hot summer days.
- Weather: the outdoor ponds close in bad weather; if the staff close them, get out.
Nearby stops worth adding
The ruins of Monterano, an abandoned hilltop town inside the Monterano regional nature reserve, are a short drive away and make a good walk before or after a soak. If you want free thermal water, the public springs around Viterbo are about an hour north: Bullicame and Piscine Carletti are open-access pools, and Terme dei Papi is a paid spa with a large thermal pool. Closer to Rome, QC Termeroma is another day spa option.
