  • The operator states plainly that the water is not geothermal. It is spring water heated and treated with chlorine dioxide.
  • Three hot pools, shaped after the Ohau, Pukaki and Tekapo lakes, run from 98-101°F36.5 to 38.5°C.
  • Evening stargazing sessions put you in a hot pool under the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
  • Day passes allow unlimited re-entry for the whole day, so you can leave for lunch and come back.

What to expect

Tekapo Springs sits at the far end of Lakeside Drive in Lake Tekapo village, right on the shore below Mt John. It is a commercial leisure complex, not a natural spring. Before you plan around it, know one thing: the water is heated, not geothermal. The operator says so in its own FAQ. The water comes from an underground source near Tekapo, is warmed, then filtered and treated with a chlorine dioxide system that leaves little chlorine smell. There is no sulphur and no mineral crust on the pool edges.

What you get instead is a well-run set of pools with one of the better outlooks in the South Island. The three hot pools are shaped after the Mackenzie Basin’s three big glacial lakes:

  • Ohau: about 98°F36.5°C
  • Pukaki: about 100°F37.5°C, the pool with wheelchair access
  • Tekapo: 100-101°F38 to 38.5°C, adults only

Below them is the Aqua Play area with a shallow pool around 90°F32°C for small children and a deeper 82°F28°C pool for actual swimming. Steam and sauna rooms with a cold plunge sit inside, for ages 16 and up. The operator notes that temperatures can shift with the weather, which on a frosty Mackenzie night is easy to believe.

The rest of the complex keeps families busy in every season: an outdoor ice rink, a 150 m snow tube slope in winter, snow play when there is cover, an 18-hole mini golf course in the warmer months, a day spa and the Altitude 720 cafe and bar.

Getting there

Lake Tekapo village is on State Highway 8, the main road between Christchurch and Queenstown via the Mackenzie Basin. From Christchurch, take SH1 south and turn inland at Rangitata onto SH79 through Geraldine and Fairlie, joining SH8 to the village. Allow about three hours. From Queenstown or Wānaka, come north over the Lindis Pass and past Twizel and Lake Pukaki.

In the village, follow Lakeside Drive west along the shore to its end at 300 Lakeside Drive. Parking for cars and buses is free on site, with marked disability spaces at the top of the driveway. From the main street shops it is a flat lakeside walk of roughly 1.5 km (about 1 mile), which is worth doing on a clear evening.

When to go

The pools are open all year, but hours change through the season and the operator posts a daily status update on its homepage. For late October and November 2026 the hot pools run 11am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 7pm at weekends, with longer hours over Labour Weekend. The Aqua Play pools keep shorter afternoon hours. Check before you drive in, especially in winter when snow and ice can change plans.

Winter (June to September) is when Tekapo Springs is at its most distinctive. The ice rink and snow tube park run, the air is often well below freezing and the steam off the pools is thick. Snow tubing is weather dependent, and July school holidays get busy enough that the operator suggests booking tube sessions ahead.

Summer brings the most visitors to Lake Tekapo overall, and the mini golf opens. Afternoons can be crowded.

At night the reason to come is the sky. Lake Tekapo sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, and the Tekapo Star Gazing tour pairs telescope viewing with a soak on a floating hammock. On cloudy nights the telescope part switches to an indoor virtual reality session, but the pool part still goes ahead. Tours run Wednesday to Sunday and must be pre-booked.

  • Food: No food or drink in or around the pools, the ice rink or the tube park, and no barbecues on site. You can eat outside on the ice rink side of the main building, or use the cafe.
  • Booking: The hot pools take walk-ins. Groups of 20+ should call ahead. Most tickets are non-refundable and valid for 12 months; spa, tube park and stargazing tickets are date-specific.

Families and accessibility

Children are welcome in the Ohau and Pukaki pools and the Aqua Play area. Supervision rules are strict and enforced by lifeguards: under-7s must be in the water within arm’s reach of a caregiver aged 16 or over, 7 to 10 year olds need a caregiver in the pool with them, and 11 to 13 year olds need a caregiver who can see them. One adult can supervise at most two under-7s, or four children aged 7 to 10.

Changing rooms and facilities have wheelchair access, and there is a route into the Pukaki pool. A free aqua wheelchair is available for assisted use, and lifeguards can help.

Where to stay nearby

There is no lodging at the springs. Lake Tekapo village, a few minutes’ drive back along Lakeside Drive, has motels, holiday parks, backpacker hostels and hotels, and gets heavily booked in summer and during school holidays. Twizel, about 45 minutes south on SH8, is the usual cheaper base and is closer to Aoraki/Mount Cook. Fairlie, about 40 minutes east, is a quieter small town on the way in from Christchurch.

Safety notes

  • Cold air, hot water: Winter nights in the Mackenzie Basin drop well below freezing. Dress warmly for the walk from the car, and keep soaks in the hottest pool short.
  • Ice: The car park, paths and steps can ice over. Watch your footing, and carry chains on SH8 in winter when the Burkes Pass area gets snow.
  • Children: Follow the supervision ratios. The deep pool is for swimming, not paddling.
  • Sauna and steam: Ages 16+ only. Drink water and use the cold plunge sensibly.

Nearby stops worth adding

The Church of the Good Shepherd is a short walk along the lakefront from the village. The road up Mt John leads to the University of Canterbury observatory and a cafe with a view across the lake. If you want geothermal water rather than heated pools, the closest developed option is a long drive north to Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools in North Canterbury. Ōpuke Thermal Pools near Methven, about two hours back towards Christchurch, is another Canterbury pool complex, and it is not geothermal either: its river water is heated mainly by solar collectors. On the West Coast side of the Southern Alps, Welcome Flat is a real natural hot spring, but it takes a full day’s tramp to reach.
