What to expect

Agkistro is the northernmost village in the Serres regional unit, tucked under Mount Agkistro (Tsingeli) a short way from the Bulgarian border. Its thermal baths are the reason most people come. The village was known as Tsingeli under Ottoman rule, when, local tradition says, the bey and his household used the hot water. Mining and bathing here go back much further: the operator and the village’s own history link the hills to iron and gold mines worked under Philip II of Macedon.

The bathhouse is not a pool complex in the resort sense. It is a set of eight private pools, each with its own look, and you rent one by the half hour for yourself, your family or your friends. Several sit under stone domes with small skylights, so the light inside is dim and the air thick with steam. The water comes in under pressure from spouts, and the operator likens it to a hydromassage.

The star is the Byzantine bath, a stone bathhouse dated to about 950 AD and billed as the oldest in Greece. It costs a euro more than the other pools and is the one to book ahead. The other seven, numbered 1 to 7, are newer. A 2025 travel feature described seven circular pools built for couples and small groups.

The water

The operator gives the water temperature as up to 99.5°F37.5°C, which is body-warm rather than hot. Other guides quote 102-106°F39-41°C or 105°F40.5°C, but the bathhouse’s own figure is more recent. The water is classed as low-mineral, hypotonic and sodium-calcium, and contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and iron. It is one of Greece’s state-recognised spa springs with a Special Operating Licence.

The baths market the water for joint, rheumatic and skin complaints. Guides also note that people with phlebitis, varicose veins, heart disease or unstable blood pressure are advised not to bathe, and travel.gr recommends no more than half an hour at a time.

Getting there

Agkistro is about 51 km (32 miles) north-east of Serres and about 8 km (5 miles) from the border with Bulgaria.

  • From Thessaloniki or Serres: Take the Thessaloniki-Sofia motorway north toward the Promachonas border crossing and follow the signs for Agkistro near the border. The baths sit on the Promachonas-Achladochori provincial road.
  • From Bulgaria: Cross at Promachonas (Kulata on the Bulgarian side) and turn east for Agkistro.

The bathhouse is about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the centre of the village. A May 2026 parliamentary question from a Serres MP described that connecting road as poorly maintained, without sidewalks or lighting, and asked for safety works. Drive carefully after dark and in bad weather. The hotel next to the baths advertises free parking.

When to go

The baths are open all year. Cold weather is when a hot soak makes most sense, and the domed rooms are at their best on a winter evening.

  • Weekday evenings are the easiest time to get a pool without a wait.
  • Weekends and Greek holidays are the busiest times, and coach groups visit too. Book.
  • Spring and autumn are good for combining a soak with the marked trails above the village.

  • Extras: The on-site spa lists massages from €20 for 15 minutes to €40 for 45 minutes, plus body treatments (prices undated).

Where to stay nearby

  • Hamam hotel (Xenodocheio Agkistro), right beside the baths, has 11 rooms and serves breakfast and coffee.
  • Xylino Chorio (“the wooden village”) in Agkistro rents traditional wooden houses; phone 23230 41008.
  • The village also has guesthouses and rooms to let.
  • Sidirokastro, the municipal seat of Sintiki to the south, and Serres have more hotels and services.

Safety notes

  • Keep sessions short. Half an hour is plenty, especially if you are older or have heart or blood pressure problems.
  • Stay hydrated and stand up slowly when you leave the pool.
  • Children should stay within reach in the deeper pools.
  • The access road is unlit in places. Watch for pedestrians walking between the village and the baths at night.

Nearby stops worth adding

Three marked trails start at the Byzantine bath: the Metaxas trail (13.5 km, moderate) climbs to the Tres Vrysses fort on the 1930s Metaxas Line; the Rock trail (6 km, easy) and the Ancient Mines trail (4 km, easy) stay closer to the village. The local social cooperative Agkistro Drasi (phone 6980138846) runs Metaxas Line tours.

Lake Kerkini, known for its pelicans and herons, is about 45 km (28 miles) away. The other spa town in the municipality is Sidirokastro, whose baths are worth a look if you are touring the Serres springs.
