What to expect

Bozeman Hot Springs is the big, convenient soak for anyone in the Gallatin Valley. It sits at Four Corners, 8 miles west of downtown Bozeman on US-191, the road to Big Sky and West Yellowstone. It is a commercial pool complex rather than a natural spring in the woods, and it feels like a busy community rec center that happens to run on hot mineral water.

There are 12 pools in total. The operator gives the range as about 57 to 106°F14 to 41°C, which covers everything from a proper cold plunge to a hot soak.

  • Indoors: The hottest and coldest pools sit right next to each other, which makes it easy to go back and forth. The indoor pools run on flow-through water with no chlorine, and staff drain and clean them every night. There is also a steam room and a dry sauna.
  • Outdoors: Four outdoor pools with rock features and underwater lights, a stage, and areas you can rent for parties. The three main outdoor pools are chlorinated.

On top of the pools there is a full fitness center, group fitness classes, swim lessons and a cafe. The place hosts live music and events, so expect a crowd and some noise on event nights.

History

The springs have been a business for well over a century. According to the operator’s history page, Bozeman wagon maker Jeremiah Mathews bought the springs in 1879 and built a bathhouse with five private rooms and a plunge. In 1890 E. Myron Ferris paid $25,000 for them, renamed them Ferris Hot Springs and added a two-story hotel, a large plunge and private baths. After World War I, Ferris split up the land and sold raffle tickets at $100 each. The hotel and springs went to a Bozeman restaurant worker. In the early 1920s Sam Collett bought the property, enlarged the plunge and built a maple-floored ballroom used for summer dances and later for roller skating.

Getting there

The address is 81123 Gallatin Road (US-191). From downtown Bozeman, head west on Main Street or Huffine Lane to Four Corners, about 8 miles, and turn south onto US-191. The hot springs are right on the highway. From Gallatin International Airport near Belgrade, it is a short drive south. If you are coming up from Big Sky or West Yellowstone, it is on your way into the valley. There is a large parking lot on site.

When to go

The pools are open year-round. The quietest times are weekday mornings, starting at 5:30am, before the after-work crowd arrives. Evenings and weekends are the busiest.

The hours follow a weekly Sabbath pattern, which catches some visitors out:

  • Monday to Thursday: 5:30am to 11pm
  • Friday: 5:30am to sundown
  • Saturday: sundown to midnight
  • Sunday: 8am to 11pm

Since sundown moves through the year, check the calendar on the website for exact Friday and Saturday times.

Reservations are online, and the registration office is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm (phone 406-587-3030). Rates are based on two people, with daily surcharges for extra adults and children. Bozeman, 8 miles east, has every kind of hotel, and Belgrade near the airport has more chain options.

Nearby stops worth adding

Norris Hot Springs, west of Bozeman in the Madison Valley, is a much smaller and more rustic soak. Heading south on US-191 takes you through the Gallatin Canyon to Big Sky and on to West Yellowstone. To the east, Paradise Valley and Chico Hot Springs are on the way to Yellowstone’s North Entrance at Gardiner. Note that the Boiling River soak inside the park has been closed since the 2022 flood.

Safety notes

  • Hot pools: The hottest pool reaches about 106°F41°C. Limit soaks to short stretches, drink water, and take extra care after a hard session in the gym.
  • Cold plunge: Jumping from 106°F41°C into a cold pool is a shock to the system. Ease in if you have any heart conditions.
  • Wet floors: Decks and locker rooms are slick. Wear sandals.
  • Kids: Lifeguard coverage is not described on the website. Keep young children within reach.
